Training AI models is a resource-heavy process. The sheer scale of computational power needed is astounding.

For instance:

  • Training Intensity: Training GPT-3 consumed around 1,300 MWh, while training GPT-4 required between 51,773 MWh and 62,319 MWh, nearly 40-48 times more than GPT-3.

  • Inference Energy Demand: Running AI models for generating responses, such as using ChatGPT, consumes around 2.9 watt-hours per request, which is significantly higher compared to traditional internet activities like a Google search, which uses approximately 0.0003 kWh per query.

Comparative Analysis

  • AI vs. Traditional Searches: A Google search consumes roughly 0.2 grams of CO2 per query, while a GPT search can emit up to 60 times more.

  • Generative AI Tasks: Certain AI tasks, like generating images, can consume up to 2.907 kWh per 1,000 inferences, highlighting the intensive energy demand of generative AI applications.

Energy Distribution in AI

The extensive energy usage in AI can be broadly categorized into three main areas:

  • Data Centers: Data centers are the backbone of AI operations. They house the servers that store and process vast amounts of data required for training AI models and running AI applications. These data centers consume massive amounts of electricity not only for computing but also for cooling the equipment to prevent overheating.

  • Training AI Models: Training large-scale AI models like GPT-3 and GPT-4 is incredibly energy-intensive. The process involves running thousands of computations in parallel, requiring extensive power for days or even weeks. The energy consumption for training a single model can be equivalent to the annual consumption of several hundred homes.

  • AI Inference (e.g., GPT Searches): Once trained, AI models still require significant energy for inference—generating responses to user queries. A single GPT search consumes considerably more energy than a traditional Google search due to the complexity of the tasks involved, such as natural language understanding and generation.
